Tell me your life doesn’t change when you have kids. Go ahead, convince me.
I’ll probably laugh in your face. Yes, really, I will. I’m not afraid to.
You see, having children changes you … for the better, of course. But all the other fun (and by fun I mean messy) stuff?
We don’t always talk about that.
Ha! That’s changing now, today, on this list. Welcome to 27 Things You Do … Now That You’re a Mom.
#1: Cut my food into bite-sized pieces
Oh yes, you can’t have a toddler choke on food, and I’m sure I need to work on the amount of food I put into my mouth at a time.
#2: Test the temperature of food with my tongue
It’s the worst feeling in the world when you see your child suffer from food that’s too hot, so as mommas, we take the heat for them. (See what I did there?)
#3: Make more vegetables
Always. It’s a blessing when your child actually likes veggies, so count that in your nightly thanksgivings. Plus, I eat more veggies then, too.
#4: Read and re-read nutrition labels
Those labels can be sneaky and deceptive at times, so you gotta analyze and read the fine print before deciding it’s good enough for your kids (and you!)
#5: Constantly put the toilet seat down
My toddler can’t even get in there yet, but I’m still paranoid that he might and play ducks and bubbles in the toilet.
#6: Close the bathroom door
You know what I mean? I got to have it closed or my son will think it’s bathtime … in the middle of the day … with all his clothes on.
#7: Hide the remote, hide the computers, hide the phones
Cause my toddler? He be playing with everything! Buttons are his favorite thing.
#8: Put lotion on the top shelf
Who’d known that babies like the taste of lotion? Can’t say it’s in my palette, so it must be an acquired taste.
#9: Check my shoes before putting them on
You know, because certain toys and objects somehow find their way into my shoes. Must be the mice.
#10: Refer to myself in the third person
Momma does this, momma will do that, hold on! Momma’s coming!
#11: Laundry … every. single. day
I’ve learned that doing one load a day works the best. Can’t wait for when I get to do 2 or 3 loads a day!
#12: Wear ratty clothes
Because you know the odds of getting puke, snot, pee, or poo on you are about 89.9%
#13: Marvel at the beauty of $3 kids shoes and clothes
Except for the fact that they fit in them for what seems like 2.5 seconds.
#14: Tip-Toe around the house during naptime
My babies like it quiet, so big bangs will not miss their ears.
#15: Start calling my parents “grandma” and “grandpa”
I’m sure they don’t care, but it’s crazy to think that I’m that old that my parents are grandparents.
#16: Obsess over a cough
You never know what kind of nutty virus is going around, so you think … Is that a wet cough? Or a dry cough? Should I Google it? Nah, it’ll probably pass.
#17: Stay awake worrying about everything
Even things like: did I fold the socks right? Or, I wonder how many diapers I have left?
#18: Read books to them
Because you remember how much you loved them and you want your kids to be smart(er) than you!
#19: Tell my kids to “be careful” like 278 times a day
Stop climbing on the table! Be careful while jumping off the couch. Watch that water puddle, you don’t want to get wet.
#20: Wonder how the kids are still alive
Whether it’s from the numerous rescues of toddler mishaps to the accidental hurts, ouch! But so far, we have all survived.
#21: Value my time alone
Sometimes a 10-minute ‘bathroom’ break does the trick, but other times you’re grabbing the keys and saying ‘good luck with the kids’ to your hubby.
#22: Wish you had a wine stash
For at least, let’s say, 7 nights a week.
#23: Freak out about gray hair
I’m telling you, my patch is growing bigger every day! I guess I could call it my shiny streak(s)…not funny.
#24: Wonder how time goes so fast
It seems like it was just yesterday that they were born. Now they don’t even want to cuddle with me.
#25: Pray more
Seriously, you have to, because who is going to pray for your children more than you? Hail Mary…
#26: Forget to-do lists
Even if I am good at making one, do I have to be good at completing it? No, spending time with family is more important.
#27: Enjoy the little moments
Yes, because they slip away too fast and too easily. Let us strive to keep the good and positive light bright in our homes!
There you have it! 27 of the best, worst, and interesting things I do now because I am a mom. A messy, scattered, thankful mom.
It’s true that having kids changes us. I think they really just make our life more interesting. Seriously, how boring were our lives before? What did we even talk about? How we finally got a pedicure? Lame.
